The Crucifixion with Saints
Church of St. Jeremia ('San Geremia'), Venice
In what is otherwise a traditional image of the crucified Christ, four saints from later history contemplate their Lord.
On the right, St. Augustine is identified by his elaborately embroidered "pontificals." Standing opposite him is St. Lorenzo Giustiniani, the first patriarch of Venice, pictured in the same white alb and with the same close-cropped hair, narrow nose, and cross-topped staff as in the background of Lattanzio Querana's
St. Joseph with the Christ Child and Saints.
Keeling before the cross is Anthony of Padua, identified by his tonsure, dark habit, and youthful appearance. The man behind the cross is St. Cajetan, the founder of the Theatine order. He is identified by his cassock and high collar, the conventional wear of the Theatine order, which he founded.
